The news: Anthropic is suing the Trump administration after the Pentagon designated it a supply-chain risk. The startup is asking the court to nullify the designation and declare the federal-wide ban unconstitutional and, therefore, unenforceable.

• Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth formally labeled Anthropic and its AI technology a “supply chain risk to national security,” after the company refused to change its contract to permit Claude’s use for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, per CNN.
• Anthropic—which built its reputation on ethical AI—is standing by its brand identity by restricting military use and refusing mass surveillance and autonomous weapons contracts.

Zooming out: Despite the blacklist designation, Anthropic’s Big Tech partners aren’t backing down. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have all confirmed they will continue offering Claude to commercial customers through their cloud platforms, insulating the startup from immediate financial damage.

“We recognize that this determination does not prevent us from collaborating with Anthropic on non-defense projects, and their products remain accessible through our platforms, such as Google Cloud,” a Google spokesperson told CNBC.

• Amazon leads Anthropic’s corporate backing with a commitment of up to $4 billion. Amazon Web Service (AWS) is still Anthropic’s primary cloud provider.
• Google invested about $300 million in Anthropic in early 2023 and participated in a $450 million funding round later that year. It offers Claude alongside Gemini as part of Google Cloud.
• Microsoft, while not an early equity investor, stands to share up to $6.4 billion in revenues with Amazon and Google through 2029 based on cloud usage. It also includes Claude’s models in Microsoft 365.

Implications for the industry: The legal fight ahead will test whether an AI startup can maintain ethical boundaries and still access US government and federal contracts.
